The Results using Oyin and Camille Rose!!!

Well Hello All!
A few days ago it was a super rainy day in Columbus so you know what that means FRIZZ!!!!!! I did a twist out using Oyin Burnt Sugar Pomade. I deep conditioned using Camille Rose Algae Deep Conditioning Mask. As I stated before I love the smell but just wish it was a little bit thicker.

Very soft and light. Great smell and it does stay with your hair for awhile.

For all hair types but great for dry hair especially with alittle bit of olive oil

Wish it was thicker and coated the hair better....

I did manage to remember to take pictures of my hair before I went to work so you can see how everything turned out....

Look at the shine on those twists! Oh yeah! Now I did not stretch the twists out as I normally would due to...well...laziness lol Normally I gather 2 or 3 twists and pin them down and tie my hair down with a scarf. Shows more length.

I love the way the sun reflects off of the twist out! Oyin works great!!!!!

Great definition and very moisturizing!

Alittle does go a looooooooooong way so dont get caught up trying to use alot. It will weight your hair down and cause build up. You might want to keep it away from your scalp to svoid scalp build up. Keep in mind it is a POMADE not a leave in conditioner. Normally I would use a leav in and use the Burnt Sugar as a sealant but I skipped the leave in to check out the results....not too shabby if I say so myself...*pats self on back*

Winter up Those Curls!

by Tara Lisciandro-Hornich via NaturallyCurly.com

Cold weather isn’t everyone’s favorite type of weather and it can make for itchy skin and a dry scalp. Curls can suffer too, especially from lack of moisture leading to dried tresses. Knowing how your skin and hair adapt, or don’t, to the cold is helpful. Once you see and feel the changes of the season, begin to make some changes to your curly hair care routine too.
Curly Hair Care Tips
  1. Stay hydrated. When cold weather starts, it get even drier, so it’s important to start drinking more water. Carry a water bottle with you to work, school or when you visit friends. You’ll see and feel a difference in your hair and skin when you start getting more hydration.
  2. Shampoo for your hair type. If you have thicker, coarser curls try to not wash them every day. You don’t want to wash away or disturb the natural oils in your hair that help promote growth and protect your tresses. If you have more sensitive skin or thinner curls, try to avoid shampoos and conditioners with lots of dyes and fragrances. Using a moisturizing conditioner as an alternate to shampoo is also an option. There are lots of great conditioners out there to try for all curl types.
  3. Deep-condition. Some good ones to try: Jessicurl Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment, DevaCurl Heaven in Hair or Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Moisturizing Conditioner. Read the directions to your deep-conditioner carefully. You’ll want to set aside 30 to 45 minutes for the product to sit in your hair. Cover your hair and sit under a dryer, if you can, to help intensify the effects of the conditioner. Be sure to rinse the product out to avoid build-up or flaking later.
  4. Get rid of summer products! When the cold weather sets in, you may also want to make some changes to the products you normally use for spring and summer months. Get rid of anything you no longer use or won’t be using over the next two to three months. Make space for new items you’ll need for the upcoming cold weather season. It’s best to look for products that have lots of humectants for your curls during cold, winter months. Puddings, creams and butters are all great options for cold weather curly hair care. You may have to experiment and see just how much of the product your tresses will need. Since these are heavier products, you may need to transition into them over a few weeks. You may also want to keep a refresher product on hand during the winter months as well. There are a number of wonderful curl mists and freshening sprays that can help revive curls from the drying conditions of cold winter months.
  5. Dress up your curls. Lastly, remember to “dress up” your curls with a cute hat, or some other type of protection during the winter season. A lot of curlies like cowl neck sweaters and jackets that have over-sized hoods. There are also a number of cute crocheted/knitted hats that work well with curls as they don’t press or flatten hair as they’re worn. You may opt to loosely wrap a scarf around your curls as well.

When Natural Hair Disturbs Family Ties

While on my top blog site http://www.curlynikki.com/ I came across this post and I thought it was some of the BEST advice I have read for new naturals!

by Bennii of Benniiblast.com
Over the last few months, I have scrolled through countless posts where transitioning women have shared their stories of mothers, sisters, boyfriends/husbands etc being less than encouraging about their decision to go natural. As a transitioner myself, I understand what it takes for someone to make the decision to change a habit of what seems like a lifetime, by letting go of those 'beloved' relaxers. So, when I hear the worries of a first month transitioner contemplating on going back on the lye because of the negative views of others, it really gets under my skin…
For the longest time, we have had it instilled in us that 'God loves us no matter what we look like', by our mother's and father's. If this is the case, why are some relatives quick to tell us things like; 'it's time for you to get a relaxer' or, 'curly hair doesn't look good on you'? Is this a sad case of hypocrisy perhaps? It seems that maybe God only loves us in their eyes if we are not going against the grain and fitting a particular image. I understand that yes, it may be hard for those around you who are accustom to seeing you look one way to see this change, but to completely refuse to support someone whom you love in wanting to do what makes them happy is a real shame.
One thing that really gets to me is the cheek some people have in believing that they should be the one to make a decision like this for you. For example, you decide where you work, what clothes you wear, and what kind of food you eat because they were YOUR decisions to make. YOUR hair is growing from YOUR head so why should someone else make the decision about what you do with it? In my eyes, it shouldn't effect our relatives lives in any way whatsoever, whether your hair is natural, relaxed or bright pink with orange highlights. It doesn't stop you from being a good sister, girlfriend/wife or daughter, so I cannot imagine what justifiable reason there could be for this kind of behaviour.
I know how hard this journey can be sometimes and having to deal with negative remarks from family can make it 10 times harder, so here are a few suggestions that may help:

Educate and Inform:
Sit down with your family members and explain to them how damaging relaxers are to not just your hair, but also your health. Visit your favourite natural hair communities (blogs, forums etc) and allow them to see the bigger picture – they may have been misinformed which have caused false preconceptions.

Reassurance:
Let your relative know that you are the same person you were before you started your journey, and that your hair is only accountable for a small part of who you are.

Dig further when negative comments are made:
If someone in your family is constantly making negative comments about your hair, sit down with them and encourage them to explain to you why they are behaving like this, knowing how it makes you feel – try to get to the root of where this negativity is coming from

Try to ignore comments:
If comments are made – don't rise to them. Sometimes all people want is to know they can get a reaction out of you, so don't give them the satisfaction

Surround yourself with like-minded people:
When you feel that the lack of support from your family is really getting to you, jump on to your favourite hair blogs and read stories about successful transitioners. It will give you the boost you need. Hang out with people who you know will discuss other things than hair and will hopefully take your mind off of things. You could also avoid being around negative family members at times when you are feeling particularly vulnerable about your hair.
It takes someone who is strong and not afraid of change to make the decision to transition. You have already shown that you believe you have what it takes to go on this journey by actually starting it – so don't start doubting yourself now. At the end of the day, we are the same people we were before we started this journey. Selfishness and pride should not stop someone from supporting someone they love in doing what makes them happy.

What we look like should not unsettle our relationships with those who truly love us.

I am Officially Somewhat Famous!

That's right! You read correctly! I am somewhat famous! Well I was recently invited to be featured to be in a commercial as the Natural girl! The commercial was for my FAVORITE salon in my area. The stylist name is Raymond Torregano and I have known him for roughly 9years! And when I say he has skills...he has SKILLS so check out his other videos on his Youtube channel. He can do it all!!! The name of the shop is Rhythm Hair Studio...one of my favorite places to chill in Columbus! So you know I jumped on that opportunity! Shall we say I was excited??? We shall because I was! But yet I was nervous because I am use to being in front the camera but not a video camera! Something new indeed. The shoot went great so here are some pics!!!

Sadly my pictures are super small! Ugh! Computers...smh...how I hate them so. BUT we did my normal twist out on dry hair using Camille Rose Moisture butter and did about 20 twists. My hair was lightly sprayed with Oyin Juices and Berries to aid with detangling as usual.

Here is a link to see the full commercial! Hope you enjoy!

My Wedding Bun!!!

Sigh..wish I was hearing wedding bells but not so much! I am discovering my ability to bun my hair! Hooray for buns! They are super simple and it allows my hair to stay stretched and helps avoiding tangling! So simple! Well here is my wedding bun...super easy...

Step 1. Detangle hair and pull into a high ponytail. I prefer to use a elastic ouchless headband and cut it and use it to tie around the ponytail.

Step 2 Pin pieces of bun towards the center of the puff....viola!

                                                                        Sexy bun!!!

If you want to get fancy you can throw a twist in the front!

Super easy took a few minutes. I wore my hair in a bun for 3 weeks and I loved it! Quick in the morning!!! I will definately rock it more...

Confessions of a Product Junkie...

Yes..I admit...I am a product junkie...sigh...sad but true. It is so easy to become one! I mean with a new product coming out everyday claiming to do exactly what YOU need it to do...sigh...alas I'm easily swept in alot of the hype especially since I am on blogs daily.

Ok now that I have admited it...I will admit..I am slowly breaking the habit...slow indeed.

Well even though I do look at different products and new usages for products daily I have managed not to buy not one new product in.....uhhh...weeks? Something like that lol but the last product I brough was at the Natural Hair Meet Up in Atlanta in November so I think I have been doing pretty darn good!

I also have been trying to just use the products I have and discover ways to make them work better for me. Like my Hello Hydration for example...I now know I can use it both as a leave in and wash out conditioner. It can be used for a Wash n go if I ever decide to try that and it is possible great for a twist out also. So that is great that it now has double usage.

I know it will take some time to tame my junkie ways but I am indeed trying alittle bit more than I use to lol
I am almost complete out of conditioner so now I need to try something new..maybe Yes to Cucumber??? I have yet to try it...

I very much love Yes to Carrot so maybe Yes to Cucumber would be just as good if not better....Hmm do i smell a prodcut review???? I think so!!

I have been on www.curlmart.com looking for new products to order...of course I have a Wish List I will slowly start marking products off of...Jessie Curl...Bee Mine...As I Am...My Honey Child...just to name a few. Part of my product is the interest in products and the results, not so much trying to find a miracle product...well let me retire and head to the movies!!! WOOT WOOT!!!!

XoXo

Trying Something Different!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!

I pray your day has been wonderful!!! Mine has been great! My family is happy and that makes me happy!!! I am chilling and watching The Wiz...great movie!!! Micheal Jackson is my favorite character in the movie!!

Well after I decided to wash my hair and try something alittle different....

I did do my henna and after roaming around Sai Indian, my local indian store, I stumbled across a powder by the other herbal powders and on the box it notated it is a not only a colorant but also used for conditioning. I think it is called Heenera....keyword is THINK..lol I am blogging unperpared from my moms house so I will get back to you on the name when I get home! Ok so the box staes it can be used to turn your hair reddish..well i brought it and added it to my normal henna recipes. My hair didnt change any but I will say it was super soft after. Maybe after I few tries it will change...maybe...possibly? Well i am hopeful!!!

I was reading on one of my favorite blogs www.curlynikki.com I read she used Herbal Essence Hell Hydration as a leave in on a twist out. After reading all of the remarks I noticed alot of people are using it for their twist outs and had great results so I decided to finally use the Herbal Essences that I already had. Since I had sometime before I would be able to actually twist my hair after I washed it I just ran alittle Hello Hydration and Extra Virgin Olive Oil through my hair and my hair smells SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good and it was super soft. If ever in life I wanted to try a Wash n Go I would use that even though my hair is not
"wash n go hair". It is just to think for that. It would be a Wash, detangle, attempt to shingle and about an hour later Go. I am not enjoying the idea of that.

I did twist using my usual Shea Yogurt by Alikay and my gel from Koils and then using the Hello Hydration. I will admit my twists were very soft so I pray for a good turn out! I will left you know when I take my twists out Tuesday for work!

Yall enjoy the rest of your Christmas!

Piggy Back Yall!!!

Weird title and picture but it does serve a purpose lol I promise
Ok well I was on one of my favorite blogs www.bglhonline.com and I came across an article dated
02 December 2010 Hair Confessions: Are you doing the most? thought it was so funny to think about when I first BC my hair 1/8/2011...first lets start with my reply:

"Oh goodness where to start!!???!! lol Ok well when I first BC 1/8/2011 I was so overloaded with excitement of wanting to try all the products I seen on youtube and wanting my hair to look like everyone elses on all the blog sites. I overloaded my hair with so much oil and leave in conditioners I would have white spots in my hair!!! I mean I was caking it on like crazy! Oil all running down my neck and staining my pillow cases! lol smh what was I doing????? I am jump on board with everyone else with the oily bathtubs! I actually did fall in the tub! lol so sad…I use to retwist my hair nightly for my twist outs! I mean actually redo ALL THE TWISTS! I would spend over an hour twisting every night! Oh man when I was able to do a puff I would puff it out EVERYDAY! I am too blessed to still have edges!!! I spend 70 dollars my first time getting products from Target and THEN ordered MORE products from online and spent 70 more dollars! Yes indeed doing the most! I have downed the amount of products I have and I try not to buy more until I finish what I already have and I have stopped comparing my curls to others and I am now in love with my own hair"

Goodness I had to learn learn learn and learn so much about MY hair..not everyone elses but MINE. I was so obsessed with keeping up with The Curlies I could not see my hair for what it was for BEAUTIFUL! It took my awhile to get in the groove but I think I got it now! lol I am coming up on a year since my BC!! Wow time has passed and I am too happy about my minimal product inventory and better knowledge on HOW to use what I already have. Less is more and thank God I got the idea of that through my head because I so thought adding a gallon of random oils to every product I owed would make them better....lol...smh... I have learned and willingly to spread my knowledge to stop others from making my same mistakes I made...BEWARE OF PRODUCT OVERLOAD  DONT END UP LIKE THE PICTURE lol

Its Not What You Use But How You Use it!

And my post is just that....when it comes to products and methods it is really more about HOW you use a product rather than what kind of product it is. I mean of course the TYPE of product matters alot but you can have the best products in the world but all of that does not matter if you DONT KNOW HOW TO USE IT! I have revisited many products from my past and they have worked wonders NOW. I have to ask myself WHY DIDNT IT WORK BEFORE???????? Well then I think back and I remember I had no idea about uses and HOW much to use. My main issue was the much I would use...I had in my head the more the better. WRONG ANSWER! My hair would be weighed down and I was having to wash it alot because I had so much product build up. I have learned how to use alot of products and to pull back on the urge to slap on 50 pounds of products all the time. With that lesson I have also saved money on products because I am not using up everything all the time! Well except for my conditioners and deep conditioners...smh...I blow through those of so very quickly lol I havent mastered that just yet! I am working on it....somewhat.

XoXo

Henna FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I took 2 weeks off of my henna schedule and for like the first time EVER I waited 2 weeks to wash my hair! lol Ugh! I know!!!! So sad and ewh! I wanted to wait until i henna'ed so I could do the detangling and twisting so i waited until I had all the time to do it the right way. So I mixed up my henna and henna'ed my friends hair also. I let my henna stay in for about 12hrs or so ( I went to sleep). After I wash out my henna I like to use conditioner to get some of the particules out. I know I should juse go get a sifter but I have yet to do it. So I like to use a really good conditioner to get some of the left over henna out. I like to Organix Coconut Milk Conditoner. I was too delighted when I found they sold it in a SUPER HUGE bottle for like 6.99 at Walmart. I jumped on it! It is my top favorite product line also.

I deep conditoned with an old familiar friend Shea Moisture Deep Treament Masque. The first time I used it I did not know what I was doing so the end results were not great but this time I loved it oh so very much!

Once I washed out the Deep Treatment Masque my hair was so soft and very defined curls and just lovely. I tried to get a good picture but yah know how that works out lol

I was loving my hair!!!!! Could not stop touching it! So then I used some samples I got from the All Natural Hair Show and Expo....I did grab a few packets because I did want to try them! They were from a company called III Sister's of Nature and it is called Sweet Bounce Back. they compare this product to Miss Jessie's Super Sweetback. Now being that I have never used a Miss Jessie's product in my life I cannot do the comparison but I do like the product. It smells nice a real light scent and it is not a heavy product.
Now to get a sort of firm hold I did run alittle bit of my Koils gel through my hair before running the Sweet Bounce Back and then twisting in to smaller twist on top and medium size twists in the back and middle.
(ignore the look on my face lol idk why my eyes are closed)

I pinned all my twists down as i usually do and I hope my twist out turns out good! I will update with pictures tomorrow! *hugs*

Would You Really Choose Length over Health????

Hello All! I just had to write this because I see so many people that rather have long hair instead of healthy hair. I understand in the eyes of many length is the epitome of beauty…not in my eyes but in the eyes of many. I have spoken to several women who have thinning hair and inches and inches of split ends but REFUSE to cut their hair to a healthier length. If I can see the damage then why can’t YOU? Are you too blinded by the fact that you have a little bit of length? OK people I understand you want the your hair flowing in the wind and you want to look like a movie star but……let’s take a closer look at your actual hair strands. If your ends are really frayed and uneven and super thin…your best bet might be to clip them. Now if you really really are against cutting your hair ok fine but AT LEAST take care of the obviously problem! A deep conditioning would not kill you. Take time out of your life to really take care of your hair. Care for your strands and figure out exactly what your hair needs to get back healthy.

Ok now you know I am all for the natural hair “movement” (as people like to call it) and I would encourage anyone to go natural and I would help them every step of the way BUT once again we need to focus on the HEALTH of the hair. If you notice your hair is super dry, thin, it curls and then is straight and it is shedding a lot….you REALLY need to think about health. I get a lot of people telling me they rather have hair like mines BUT they fail to know what all I do to my hair to promote health. I put hours into my hair and I spend money to find products that work for MY hair. I am willingly to set aside the time and effort to assure my hair remains healthy and I listen to my hair. Over the past few months I have learned to not fight with my hair but to work with it. I am in LOVE with my hair so I can appreciate its beauty. Ahhh my love affair with my hair lol

I don’t try to force everyone in the world to go natural BUT a lot of people can benefit from listening to their hair but hey I am a lover of the natural!!! =0) I just feel like overall we should care about the health instead of NOT wanting to cut it due to length-phobia and not wanting to put the time in and caring about what other people hair looks like. We cannot continue comparing our curls to others! I had to stop doing it myself because I am TOO in love with Curly Nikki’s hair *fans self* it is BEAUTIFUL! Forget my hair we all need to look at hers! Lol Just Playing…kinda…sorta…ok naw I am lol But then again she has AMAZING hair because she takes the time to give her hair EXACTLY what it needs when it needs it! EDUCATION PEOPLE!!!! Learn and EDUCATE!!!! I google daily and I am on blogs DAILY!!!! I like learning new tricks and methods that will improve my hair care regime. I am open to ideas so HOLLA AT ME!!!!

Top 5 newly natural hair mistakes

I also found this list on that site and I thought it was funny but SO true also! And make sure you check out www.mynaturalhairstore.com ! It was alot of products and info!

 1. waiting too long to big chop. honey, cut it off already or get good trims and keep that stuff braided up especially if you are type 4 because your breakage is going to be serious.

2. too much heat to compensate for the straight ends. two words – heat damage.

3. going into being natural as if you hair is going to be fab by default. this was my problem. i thought that just by being natural my hair would thrive and grow long and be this larger than life, extra ordinary fro. long it did grow, but thrive. no so much. i didn’t know what i was doing when it came to care nor did i take the time to really learn what other naturals were doing on top of pressing my hair twice a week. talk about breakage. ouch!

4. not letting go of what you used to look like with a relaxer. flaming hot unpopular opinion ahead! news flash! you don’t look that naturally – it’s fake; a mirage, a silicone boobie. it’s fake because you had to FORCE your hair to be straight so when you see the real you it’s a shocker. i know it’s a process, but lets work to get over it and move on with your life.

5. obsession with curl pattern. either you have it or don’t. been there, done that, got the tee shirt. again, we gots to keep it moving and work with you were born with. stop shingling and giving yourself tendinitis and early onset arthritis trying to get your hair that probably has no curl to curl. curls are pretty and so are no curls so let it do what it do.

TEN SYNTHETIC COSMETIC INGREDIENTS TO AVOID

I stumbled upon this list via http://www.mynaturalhairstore.com./. I try not to use things on this list but I do slip up a time or two..or three..well you get the gist lol But hpe you find this useful:

1.  IDMETHYL, PROPYL, BUTYL, AND ETHYL PARABEN-Used as inhibitors of microbial growth and to extend shelf life of products. Have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Studies have shown that they are weakly estrogenic and can be absorbed by the body through the skin. Widely used even though they are know to be toxin.

2.  DIETHANOLAMINE (DEA), TRIETHANOLAMINE (TEA)-Often used in cosmetics as emulsifiers and/or foaming agents. They can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation and dryness of hair and skin. DEA and TEA are "amines" (ammonia compounds) and can form cancer-causing nitrosamines when they come in contact with nitrates. Toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.

3.  DIAZOLIDINYL UREA, IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA-These are widely used preservatives. The American Academy of Dermatology has found them to be a primary cause of contact dermatitis. Two trade names for these chemicals are Gernall 11 and Germall 115. Neither of the Germall chemicals contains a good antifungal agent, and, they must be combined with other preservatives. Both these chemicals release formaldehyde, which can be toxic.

4.  SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULFATE-A cheap, harsh detergent used in shampoos for its cleaning and foam-building properties. Often derived from petroleum, it is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the phrase "comes from coconuts." It causes eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, skin rashes and other allergic reactions.

5.  PETROLATUM-Also known as petroleum jelly, this mineral oil derivative is used for its emollient properties in cosmetics. It has no nutrient value for the skin and can interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dryness and chapping. It often creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap.

6.  PROPYLENE GLYCOL-Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant. It has been known to cause allergic reactions, hives and eczema. When you see PEG (polypropylene glycol) on labels, beware- these are related synthetics.

7.  PVP/VA COPOLYMERA-petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, styling aids and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic, since inhaled particles can damage the lungs of sensitive person.

8. STEARALKONIUM CHLORIDE-A quaternary ammonium compound used in hair conditioners and creams. Developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, it is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which are beneficial to the hair. Causes allergic reactions. Toxic.

9.SYNTHETIC COLORS-Used to make cosmetics "pretty" synthetic colors, along with synthetic hair dyes, should be avoided at all costs. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6. D&C Green No. 6. Many synthetic colors can be carcinogenic. If a cosmetic contains them, don't use it.

10.SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES-The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply read "fragrance." Some problems cause by these chemicals include headaches, dizziness, rash, the list goes on. Advice: Don't buy a cosmetic that has the word "fragrance" on the ingredients label

And the Results are.....

Well Hello again!

As I promised PICTURES!!!! Well first off here is how i pinned my twists back the lazy way
And actually I thought it looked kind of cute so I will be trying to rock this as an actual style soon! lol

Ok then I took my twists out this morning...hmmm...I shall say NO holding properties! My hair frizzed the moment I took the twists out! I was later told I could of used alil gel to hold it together better...hmmm alil too late lol BUT I will say I started liking it more as it frizzed up a bit. I do enjoy alil frizz in my twist outs!

You can see the frizz in the back already!!!!

This side was alittle more defined
My pictures are all out of wack because.....well I really dont have a reason lol they are just doing what they want to do! Ok well back to the subject...yea did not really like it at first but then enters MONSTER frizz.....
And this I love lol But I will say I will be using my Lavender Koils gel I got at the hair show because it smells great and it does not have a strong hold so I will use that on clean hair instead of on top of this. OH one thing I almost forgot to say...my hair STILL smells wonderful from using the Alikay Shea Yogurt!!! So good! So i will continue using that product! Thumbs Up!!! Well back to homework for me!

Open Letter to a Newbie Naturalista

Now I found this article on bglhonline.com. I also check out this website DAILY!!!! It is very informative to say the least! Love it! Helped me with articles such as this when I first BC. Enjoy!

This is a note to my dear friend who recently did the big chop and to all women out there who have just begun their natural hair journey.  I know what you’re going through.  You might be on cloud nine after leaving the salon feeling happy to be natural.  Until you wake up the next morning, look in the mirror and wonder “now what?”.  Please know that I am with ya as someone that went natural just seven months ago.  I want you to know a few things as you take steps to become reacquainted with yourself.  And so, this is my advice to you:
Now that you are natural, you will need to embrace yourself in a whole new way.  Your hair in its natural state will bring out your unique beauty. There will be days when you feel “ugly”.  When you wake up in the morning and your hair is smushed to one side and you have no idea how to tame it.  Always know that you will get through it and you are NOT ugly.  Your natural hair is a new element to your beauty and will require time and patience for you to get to know it and the tools to treat it with care.

Whenever you walk down the street, you will find yourself staring at other women with natural hair.  Thoughts like “what does she use in her hair?”, “oooh that’s a nice style”, and “hey, she’s natural too!” will come to mind.  This is normal; embrace your new acceptance into the natural hair community.Your hair will not do the same things as her hair.  Although we may have similar hair types and textures, do not expect your hair to look exactly like someone else’s even if you use the same products.  Whatever your hair type is, own it!

Speaking of products, don’t, I repeat, DON’T become a product junkie.  You may not be able to avoid this in the beginning as you search for products that work best for your hair.  But as soon as you find your top 3-4 products that work for you, give away the rest to your other natural hair friends.

Youtube is your friend; use it!  From style tips, tutorials and product reviews, the resources are endless.Experiment!  This is your time to be free and creative by trying new things with your hair.  Natural hair can be just as versatile as relaxed no matter what length it is.  This can be extended to your wardrobe as well.  Going natural represents a new you so mix it up with a funky chic outfit to compliment your new natural do.

Know that not everyone will cheer you on with your decision to go natural.  Going natural is not just a fashion statement but also a decision of personal growth and preference.  Some people won’t understand it but learn to be ok with that and still love your hair anyway. You are not alone.  There are plenty of women who became natural before you and there will be plenty after you.  Reach out to them, ask questions, and offer support.  We are a strong loving community!

Be patient.  As hard as that is to hear, you’ll be better off if you just embrace and get to know your hair one day at a time for as long as it takes.Your natural hair will be wild and unruly; that’s beauty of it, don’t fight with it.  Let it do what it do.I’m sure many of you who have gone through the first stages of having natural hair can relate to some of my points above.  The truth is that we will have different experiences through our natural hair journey but always remember that your hair is an extension of your appearance; true beauty starts from within.  So go out, hold your head high, and rock that natural hair!

With love,Ariane

Old School Practices You Should Consider Ditching Posted by CURLYNIKKI

per http://www.curlynikki.com/ On my daily quest for knowledge I stumbled upton this articles and others. I learn so much from other Natural people who seem to have it all together!

Hair Tips by Tammy Goodson of Curlychics

1. Using “grease” to oil your scalp (Blue Magic, Ultrasheen, etc.)
This very old school practice was once considered a treat and darn near a religious experience to have someone “grease your scalp”. Most little girls spent Saturday afternoons between their mother’s legs with a jar in tow. It was supposed to treat dry scalp, add sheen and provide nourishment to the hair strands.
Reasons to Reconsider
• Clogs the pores
• Attracts dirt
• Weighs down tresses leaving a greasy feeling

2. Scratching dandruff
This old school practice often went hand in hand with old school practice #1. This is the act of going through the hair section by section with a comb and scratching the partings in the hair, thus lifting all the dandruff and dry flakes from the scalp.
Reasons to Reconsider
• Causes irritation to the scalp
• Causes damage to the hair at the root
It is also not recommended to scratch the scalp when shampooing or co washing. Gently massage the scalp without using fingernails is sufficient.

3. Brushing your hair 100 times per day
This practice was at one time considered the key to growth stimulation and blood circulation. What we know now is that nothing good can come from excessive brushing.
Reasons to Reconsider
• Causes split ends and breakage
• Causes permanent damage to the hair cuticle
Blood circulation can be achieved through scalp massages. In addition to aiding in stress reduction, scalp massages strengthen the hair shaft and follicle.

4. Referring to our coils as “good hair” or “bad hair”
Although this is very old school thinking, it is unfortunately still very much a part of our hair culture.
Reason to Reconsider
• Good hair is merely healthy hair and does not refer to curl pattern or hair type.

5. Teasing or backcombing
This old school practice played an essential part in achieving big hair. The act of holding the hair strand up with one hand while combing the hair down to the root with the other hand is the basic definition. It is still widely used when creating updos and big buns.
Reason to Reconsider
• While it does create volume, it can also cause massive tangling and stress on the hair strands leading to split ends.Sharing hairstories and life experiences from a curl’s perspective. Find Tammy at her blog, Curlychics, on Twitter, and Facebook.

My Natural Hair Journey Regrets....

Why hello again! Well yes you read the title right...regrets. We all hva ethem and I know I have just a few natural hair regrets....

  1. Well my first time going natural I really wish I would of research everything and really find out the do's and don'ts early on instead of just diving in eyes closed. Thats why I only last 6 months! Had no idea what I was suppose to do while transitioning.
  2. I regret the 2nd time I went natural i really wish I would of BC alot sooner so I could rock the TWA!!! They are too cute!!! I was so afraid and just KNEW I would be looking crazy with short hair even though I normally cut my hair frequently so i dont know what my hang up was.
  3. Not completely reading up on HENNA! The first 2 times I henna'ed my hair I did not DC after! I guess I just read half the article and just ignored the rest! I reread it some weeks after and it CLEARLY states to DC after lol WOW! I was wondering why my hair was so dry and crispy after...silly me lol
I am so sure I will have more regrets BUT I hope I learn enough now not to miss up too bad later lol
